TAPAS, TAPS & TIDBITS

Food & Drink in Greater Hamilton

In this month's tapas and taps, the Brown Notes once again visit a local brewery and try some ales ... and pizza.

2 months ago, I wrote about Shawn and Ed Brewing celebrating their 10th Anniversary.  So, for the second installation of Beer With The Brown Notes, we stopped by Shawn and Ed Brewing to sample some of their beers.  Once again, we tried 4 beers and played 4 songs.  You can find the videos of us playing songs and trying the beers on our YouTube Channel or on the band's website or just scan the QR code below (print only).

We tried two of the original beers: The Salted Lime Cerveza and the Original LagerShed Lager.   We originally were going to try the Amber and the Ultra, which I've reviewed before, but Mark asked us to sample a couple of their newer products:  They are moving their ales to a sub-label HopShed, so we tried the HopShed Session Ale and the HopShed IPA.

The band, as you’d expect, loved all the beers but we also had some comments about them.  The Salted Lime Cerveza, previously reviewed, is a fantastic beer for the summer.  It is akin to a Corona with a crisp light taste and easy to drink.  It is also lower alcohol.  We all like the original LagerShed and there’s a reason it’s still one of their core beers … great flavour, not too strong and a little more oomph than the salted lime.    The newer ales were also very good.  I found the Session IPA good on flavour, though quite hoppy, especially considering it’s lower alcohol content.  The IPA was a stronger beer and even hoppier, but full of flavour.  Koz, our drummer, not big on IPA’s loved that beer, even more than the session.  We didn’t sample the Ultra when we taped the segment, but I will say that it is one of the best Ultra’s that are out there, and made locally.  Lower calories and lower alcohol, but still great, light taste.

After we had played a few songs and tried a couple of Shawn and Ed's delicious beverages, we sat down to a couple of their wood-fired pizzas.  I've had them before and they are delicious.  But the one that stood out for me the most, as well as for Olaf and Shawn (our bass player not the brewery owner), was the prosciutto, apple and blue cheese pizza.  Absolutely different and absolutely delicious.  The pizzas were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

So get down to Shawn and Ed Brewing for some great beer, great live music and delicious pizza. And once again, check out our videos of our original tunes and our sampling.  Cheers!
